An Homage to R.E.M.

In 1993, I had an exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, hometown of the band R.E.M. Apparently several members of the band, including Michael Stipe, their iconic lead singer/songwriter, attended the exhibit during the course of its run appreciating both my work AND the fact that I created it on behalf of conservation advocacy.

Surprisingly, they went further by contacting me directly to express their support of what I was doing with my art, and they forwarded me some uniquely packaged CDs of their albums with handwritten notes. I had always loved R.E.M.'s music, but was amazed that such a hugely popular group found the time to reach out in this fashion. Over the years, I also received newer releases from them as they became available.

I am sorry to learn that they have chosen to quit the business, but it is great to know they do it remaining friends with each other and by mutual decision. Not all rockers want to tour forever, being "on-the-road" is a grueling exercise. I would like to wish them the best with the rest of their lives and to thank them for being a GREAT band that not only delivered ROCK, but did so with intelligent, sophisticated lyrics.

Oh yes, what are my favorite songs? It is impossible not to like their "classics": "Everybody Hurts", "Losing My Religion", "Man On The Moon", "It's The End Of The World", and "Fall On Me" to highlight a few. However, the songs that resonated in me for other reasons are "Stand" because of its content/intent and "Crush With Eyeliner" just because IT IS ROCK; wicked guitar!

This image also employs a technique for rendering deep dimension, combining it with the stitchery illusion of leaves in motion, blurring as they move in front of the camera. Since 1986 noted nature photographer and environmental activist Robert Glenn Ketchum has collaborated with Master Embroiderer Meifang Zhang to create embroideries based on his photographs. As Director of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute (SERI) and then founder of the Suzhou Embroidery Art Innovation Center (SEAIC), Meifang Zhang occupies a prominent place in the development of Chinese traditional embroidery. The works in this exhibition are some of the latest pieces created in that collaboration. Zhang says, “Robert is bringing forth new ideas in every work of his photographic art, unbroken transformations, unbroken emergence of new features. How can our embroidery take the features of photographic works, adopt the embroiderers’ best vocabulary, our colors, our needlework, our methods regarding the relationship of full and empty, to express those pieces in the best way?” Since the first small, tentative steps in the collaboration, Ketchum’s enthusiasm, confidence and knowledge have combined with Zhang’s skill, persistence and insight to create a stunning new embroidery that represents at once the retention and growth of tradition.

One of the marks of the success of the collaboration has been its continued development. China in 1986 was only a few years past the end of the Cultural Revolution: the nation was rapidly opening up but there was no solid assurance that the suspicions and political attacks were over. For Meifang Zhang, the opportunity to open a collaborative project with a foreigner was something to consider carefully. Politically there was some worry; but more critical was Zhang’s uneasiness with Robert’s project itself. While Zhang had worked with many Chinese artists, they had all been painters. She was not sure that her group could produce a piece that this American photographer would be satisfied with. Her group at that time, the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute (SERI), was a prestigious state work unit whose pieces were often used as state gifts or in government buildings. Photography was not even considered a fine art in China, while embroidery like SERI’s most definitely was. The first collaborative piece, Snowfall was a modest, relatively small piece to see whether embroidery was right for Robert’s vision. Robert’s happiness with the finished piece opened the collaboration.

Over the next twelve years, Robert and Meifang explored the ways that embroidery could express what Robert captured in his photographs. Pieces got bigger and the exploration of color and texture yielded remarkable works. The work of those first dozen years was exhibited (with a catalog) at UCLA’s Fowler Museum of Cultural History in 1998 to great acclaim. Each piece expressed the original photograph in a way that actually conveyed more surely the effect of the original. The standing screen embroidery The Beginning of Time (in this exhibition as well) was more than a restatement of the original photograph, it was a conversion of photographic vocabulary to the language of embroidery and Chinese painting: almost blank areas made misty transitions to more defined areas and yet the embroidery made a strong contrast between foreground and background. The colors and subtle shadowing of the photograph emerged more striking than ever. The Beginning of Time ushered in a new direction in the collaboration, one that would move the works away from literal descriptions of nature to a closer exploration of Robert’s core supra-real vision.

Speaking of one of her conversations with Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong, Zhang said, “You can’t repeat tradition… repeat, repeat… at the foundation of the tradition there’s no development, no raising up, no advance, so you’re just at zero.” You can say the tradition of Chinese embroidery begins about a thousand years ago when court painters began to collaborate with court embroiderers, a collaboration that lent embroidery the prestige it continues to enjoy to the present day. Collaboration remains an important part of the tradition, “I also collaborate with different artists. I feel all have different influences, and each artist’s collaboration has its own characteristics. In the collaboration with Robert, one characteristic is that he is an American artist, the rational concepts of an American artist’s art matured on American soil, right? First, the colors of his photographic art as I’ve said has a forceful impact, because the colors of his image are a great change from the colors of traditional embroidery. In this process, how to combine my embroidery with photography art? Much of the embroidery in the exhibition uses random- stitch embroidery. Developed in the late nineteenth century, the use of stitches which vary in direction, length and color allows the artists to build up layers of shading which traditional embroidery, made up of dense areas of parallel stitches or knots, could not achieve. Practiced almost exclusively in Suzhou, random stitch embroidery is an early example of the ways that tradition has grown in Suzhou.

Look For Gary Braasch's Climate Change Exhibit at Reagan National Airport

Many of the 50,000 passengers passing through Reagan National airport in Washington DC daily will now see a different kind of advertisement in the concourse: a new public education initiative has installed a photographic billboard of ongoing climate change today.

This Is Climate Change, an educational project of the Del Mar Global Trust, put up the first of a series of large backlighted photographs yesterday, featuring my time series view of the shrinking Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska. As part of World View of Global Warming, I rephotographed a 1894 image in 2008 to show the visible effect of global warming on the glacier near Juneau.

This Is Climate Change project will place photographs and other strong visuals in public locations to show that climate change is real and is currently impacting the United States. Despite the overwhelming scientific findings on the reality of man-made climate change, a 2010 Pew Research Center poll found that only 59% of Americans believed that there was solid evidence that the earth was getting warmer. “The numerous scientific reports and publications affirming that climate change is real and human induced have not seemed to sway public opinion” explains project director, Elena Marszalek, in a press release. “We thought an approach that focuses on changes which are already affecting the U.S. would make climate change a more relevant issue to the American public.”

The Del Mar Global Trust chose to collaborate with me because of my celebrated series of views of affected landscapes, part of my 11-year photojournalistic project to increase climate science literacy. The 'This Is Climate Change' educational project will be synergistic with other programs to re-emphasize the science of climate change and the implications of the rising amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The backlighted photographic billboard will be in Reagan National airport for a year; other displays of global warming in other public locations, and further collaborations, are planned.

"Gary Braasch has been one of the most devoted artists... and his epic global treks to ravaged coastlines, sinking islands, and dwindling ice sheets give us some of our most powerful images of our new reality," wrote Bill McKibben in The Global Warming Reader (Bill is not affiliated with this project but is now in Washington leading civil protests against a proposed tar sands oil pipeline from Canada)

As those who follow my work already know, I have been traveling to China on a nearly annual basis since the early 1980’s to pursue the translation of my photographic imagery into hand-stitched embroideries that range from small table top pieces and wall hangings, to complex multi-panel screens that take many years to complete.

To better know and appreciate Chinese culture, I have done a lot of traveling within China to get a feel for its vast and varied population and its far-flung cities and landscapes. My journeys have taken me into tiny rural villages at the edge of steaming jungles, up spectacular mountains, and into the heart of its humanity in cities like Beijing, Guanzhou and Shanghai. I have walked on the Great Wall, floated on the Grand Canal and bicycled with 100,000 close friends around West Lake (Hangzhou) on holiday. I have not seen it all (nor will I ever) but some places I come back to time and again because my experiences there are so rewarding. If you are inclined to visit China, or are an armchair traveler, I thought you might enjoy learning about some of these locations, too.

Shanghai is the definition of over-the-top. With a city population estimated at over 22 million, it is more first world than the first world, yet all of that trendiness is served by pedal rickshaws and homes full of families living on so little actual income the western mind can not even imagine the lifestyle. These contrasts are exactly what give Shanghai its edge - fashionista princesses decked out in Shanghai Tang clothes, carrying Louis Vuitton bags walk past old women with leaf brooms sweeping the streets, or red Maseratis navigate streets lined with homes that date back hundreds, or perhaps even thousands. Traffic chaos and driving maneuvers are unimaginable. Buildings defy reality. Food cannot be explained, nor does it need to be as it is generally quite delicious (as long as you eat Chinese and not some horrible international hotel buffet).

And, presentation is everything! That goes for hotels especially.

Shanghai has more fine hotels than you could ever take in, and most of the new ones are astoundingly opulent, while the old ones are at least elegant, so I am sure there will be plenty of people who have visited this city that will want to argue with me and suggest other locations - but this is my blog! I do not doubt the excellence of other establishments and have stayed in plenty of them, but the Jin Mao Tower that houses the Grand Hyatt, is my choice for reasons more ephemeral than just the hotel itself. The Jin Mao Tower is a spectacle of architecture.

The Grand Hyatt has all of the pre-requisites for a world-class hotel in Shanghai even though it is older by some years than most of the surrounding sky-rise: multiple good restaurants, great and courteous service, dazzling presentation, a spa/exercise complex to be enjoyed, and hi-tech guest rooms that take some work to figure out what all the buttons do. The dramatic lobby greats you with “the view” on the 54th floor, and rooms range up into the 90’s. You can always have desert later in the evening in the Cloud 9 Bar on the 99th floor.

Art is everywhere as are astounding floral displays, but this Chinese gothic chrome-glass building was built for the view, and there is never a time in your room, in the restaurants, in the bars and lounges, or even when you are buck-naked in the spa that you cannot see the world of Shanghai and the sinews of the river sprawling before you in every direction.

The Jin Mao building was built by THE CHINESE to be the tallest CHINESE building in the world. I say CHINESE because that was a mandate of its design. The design was spawned by a heated competition that was intended to emphasize new-China-style as Shanghai grew into its stunning 1st-world presence as we know it today. The final design selection involved an innovative exterior skeleton of steel rods and fins that adorn the glass house and steal beam internal frame. It is these rods and fins that give the building its gothic feeling, especially when lit at night. It is also these fins and beams that literally “howl” during the raging winds of typhoons and make the rooms somewhat less quiet.

The tallest-building-in-the-world thing did not last long as within months of completion the Jin Mao was exceeded by the Twin Towers in Kuala Lampur (and now newer buildings in many other locations, including the new Park Hyatt, across the street from the Grand Hyatt) but the Grand Hyatt design remains unique, weirdly beautiful a Chinese fortress at the waterfront edge of the new Pudong financial district.

I personally think the restaurants are overpriced and after many years recognize the interior hints at its age in places, nonetheless I am a visual devotee and I always spend at 1-2 nights in the Grand Hyatt just to drink in the architecture, scale and glory of the hazy view of the city. I NEVER close the drapes in my room, love the gadgets that lock doors and turn out lights once I get them figured out, AND can never get enough of walking up to the structure from a distance and slowly taking in its visual power. Do yourself a favor and check this hotel out if you visit. It is well worth spending some time there. The neighboring structures are equally stunning company, and the river esplanade is just several blocks away. On a warm, balmy night the denizens of Shanghai, stroll, kiss, marvel at their astounding city reflected in the waters of the river, boggle over the electronic sign displays, and eat Hagen Das along this spectacle waterfront. You won’t regret the time spent doing it either.

My Fav Places - Mountain Lodge Telluride

Beginning in the early 1960's, my family spent late fall and most of winter in a log "cabin" on the Wood River in Ketchum, Idaho because it was duck season and my Dad loved to hunt and fish. On my school break at Christmas, I would join them and so I learned to ski at nearby Sun Valley. After college (1970), I moved to Sun Valley for several years and the mountain environment began to change the subject of my photography from rock-and-roll to rocks and trees - particularly rocks, trees and snow. One of my first published portfolios consisted of 24 small, elegant black & white prints entitled, 'Winters: 1970-1980'.

Ski photography was part of the many things I shot to pay the bills, and it was in the Pioneer Bar in Ketchum that I met David Moe, who was trying to found a new ski magazine he called Powder. David was looking for potential contributors with "different" ideas, and by the early '70's I had started "pin" skiing in the backcountry with my mountaineering friends in the Decker Flats Climbing and Frisbee Club and photographing them while we explored untracked faces, old mining ghost towns and attempted a few first winter ascents on nearby summits in the Sawtooth and Pioneer Mountains. I convinced David that "heel free" skiing in the backcountry was part of the future of skiing and he conceded a quarterly section in the magazine for me to report from the field.

For most of the '70's that job at Powder was my license to ski not only in obvious places like the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, Jackson Hole, Taos and Sun Valley, but less traditional locations like Craters of the Moon National Monument, the Grand Tetons and the Wind River Mountains. I still indulge the snow season every year, crossing over to snowboarding for my 50th birthday, and riding annually with my kids (when they can keep up).

My perspective on skiing and resorts is pretty interesting as I have seen and skied most of the ones in the West. So what do I like?

Good snow is always good - anywhere - but it is other aspects of the destination that I think cause me to choose Telluride as my favorite spot. Mammoth is closest to my home, but way too close to Los Angeles, so it is always crowded and overrun by surprisingly rude adults made short tempered by long lift lines. Similarly, the I-70 corridor in Colorado has incredible resorts all along it, Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mtn., Steamboat, Aspen, but they all feed into that same stretch of freeway, which on the wrong day (especially Sunday when everyone heads home) is a worse traffic jam then than any freeway in LA. Sun Valley, Jackson, Whistler and The Wasatch (Park City, Deer Valley, Sundance, Snowbird, Alta, etc.) all have great snow and mountains, but lots of people as well because they are either hip, close or both. Telluride is just far enough off the beaten path to have the right mix of skiing and pristine, uncrowded fun. And then there is Telluride's remarkable setting.

Telluride is a great ski, the historic town may be one of the most beautiful environments of any resort, and the low profile and fun food/bar excursions are as good as any other resort destination in the West. I especially like to stay at Mountain Lodge Telluride. The Mountain Lodge is not located in the historic downtown section, but rather sits mid-mountain in the mountain village complex. It is lift -accessible to everything. You can ski in/ski out, AND it sits just outside of the main village complex, which I like because it is quieter at night without the revelers of mountain village shouting to each other beneath your window.

Mountain Lodge Telluride has suites and cabins, which suits my family time, and they are pet friendly as well, which always rates highly with Lili the Black Lab and her friends. MLT has a its own, very nice restaurant/bar, The View, with an unparalleled view window, and most importantly to me, that view is shared by the large hot tubs and pool just outside the restaurant. There are few other locations I have ever enjoyed with such a surrounding panorama of peaks all viewable from the luxury of warm water and good bar service.

Telluride and The Mountain Lodge are MUCH more than just a winter resort; in fact they are equally enjoyable in other seasons. Telluride is famous for its festivals that run almost continuously throughout the summer and fall and include Mountainfilm, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and many more. These are all fun events, set against a most amazing backdrop of mountains. The lifts service bike riding trails for all skill levels, horses can be found nearby, jeep adventures offer picnics in high basins, and when the fall arrives, it is OFF THE CHART, especially from the swimming pool complex of Mountain Lodge Telluride!

If it is important for you to "go big" when you party and socialize, then Telluride may not be your ticket and the quietude of The Mountain Lodge is definitely not your style. But if you want great private and / or family time, excellent skiing, great instructors and a town-vibe equal to no other, this is the place. Coming from mountain village over the top and descending into historic Telluride on the lift may be the best lift ride / views in North America. It takes my breath away every time and keeps me coming back, as does the food.

There is much to explore and try, and noticeably without "the crowd" I find at other resorts. Try Telluride and in particular the Mountain Lodge Telluride if you would really like to "get away". Personally if I want to hang out to be hip and seen, I LIVE in LA. When I travel to play in the mountains, I am looking for something else and Telluride and The Mountain Lodge delivers in a unique way. Check it out!

A delegation from the Bristol Bay coalition fighting offshore oil and gas development met with the Secretary of Interior, Ken Salazar, on Tuesday in Washington, DC. The purpose of their visit was to thank the Secretary for removing the North Aleutian Basin from federal leasing plans until at least 2017 and to encourage the Administration to permanently protect Bristol Bay for future generations. Secretary Salazar appeared extremely pleased to meet the group and was very receptive to their message. As part of the meeting, the group presented one of Robert Glenn Ketchum's photographs of the Allen River.

From March 29th to April 24th, The G2 Gallery in Venice is going to exhibit some very interesting aspects of my work, a seldom-viewed embroidery, and 18-panels of a repeating leaf motif that is part of my new experimentation in the digital darkroom.

The multi-panel leaf motif pays homage to Andy Warhol's camouflage repeat. The first complete part of this repeat was originally created as a 6-panel screen with each panel measuring 6ft tall by 22in wide. When exhibited, it occupies a 6ft x 12ft wall space with over-the-top colored leaves larger than your hands. It is called, 'CHOOSE JOY'.

When the divisions between the panels are removed, the 'CHOOSE JOY' leaf repeat joins at the seam and numerous symmetries become apparent. Subsequent panels play with these symmetries in various ways while always remaining within the repeat of the background leaf motif. The next six panels of repeat, 'NAVIGATING THE DARK WOOD OF ERROR' emphasize hearts and butterflies while losing color and initiating the morphing of leaf groups within the repeat.

'CONFUSED BY BUTTERFLIES', the third group of six panels, reintroduces color in the leaves, but continues the exploration of their morph. Butterflies are accentuated to an absurd degree, some appearing almost like painted graffiti, and the background color begins to shift. The now 18-panel leaf repeat is still recognizable, but transformed and shifting to a new color spectrum which will be addressed further in the next 6-panels, imagery I am now constructing.

I have NEVER had the opportunity to display all 18 of these panels in a continuous form, so I am grateful to G2 for giving me the space. Please come and see these vibrant new pieces derived from my vast library of landscape photography.

In a rare public display, G2 will also offer the most beautiful embroidery of all that I have done, 'CAN'T SEE THE TREES FOR THE FOREST'. This is a 2-sided, 3-panel standing screen with some very unique hand-dyed areas of black - they appear, then disappear, depending on the light. You must see this actual embroidery to fully understand the magic of it. 'CAN'T SEE THE TREES FOR THE FOREST' is privately owned and has only been on public display once for my 45-year retrospective at the Amon Carter Museum in Texas. This is a unique opportunity to view an extraordinary embroidery that has had little public exposure. Don't miss this.

It is infrequently that I have the opportunity to exhibit the silk embroideries and loom-weavings that I have been doing in China since the early 1980's because they are fragile and take much transportation and display care. Quite frankly, many curators also have not given them serious consideration yet, or even understand what I am doing, so they are often "excluded" from my photography exhibits. Therefore, I AM VERY EXCITED that my long-time friends and gallery representatives, Peter and Judy Wach, will be displaying several of my newest and most amazing pieces at The AIPAD Photography Show New York in the Park Avenue Armory from March 17-20, 2011. The Wach Gallery is booth #408.

AIPAD is the Association of International Photography Art Dealers, and this event will host more than 70 of the leading fine art galleries from around the world. This is a great opportunity to enjoy New York in the spring and to see an astounding variety of photographic imagery. Judge for yourself where the work I have been doing fits into all of this.

Peter and Judy have always been fans of my early black & white winter images and they will be displaying some of those original prints. It was also those images that were the first to appeal to the Chinese, so it is with great pleasure that we will display the most recent embroidery based on a winter image: "Eagle's View of Winter Mountains".

This 24'x 30', hand stitched, 2-sided, silk embroidery features some very subtle dye work done to the silk threads and a technique we use to represent diminishing distance, wherein the threads detailing the furthest point in the landscape are not full silk threads, but rather, have been sewn with 1/24 strands of unwound silk. The piece took 2-1/2 years to complete. The effect of the stitching in this image gives the appearance of Chinese brush-painting, so put on your glasses and step closer, because it is not!

The tour-de-force of my AIPAD display is "YK Delta From 1,500", a 4-panel, double-sided, standing screen based on two aerial photographic images made flying over the Yukon-Kuskokwim river delta in Alaska. This loom-weaving was created on a loom with 3,000 lines of weft, the most complex in the world, and one the Chinese built JUST to render this image. The weaving employs select areas of hand-painting and hand-dye, as well as small clusters of gold thread (to represent the sun highlights off of the water), and the incorporation of peacock feathers to bring texture into an area of dry brush. All panels were woven simultaneously and they took 4-1/2 years to complete.

The Wachs will also be displaying on of my new digital pieces, "Turn, Turn, Turn", a 6-foot tall, 32-inch wide panel conceived as an embroidery design, yet also an extraordinarily beautiful photographic print. The edition of this photographic print is only 10 and there are just a few left, so enjoy this before it is gone. And yes, the Chinese are doing it as an embroidery of the same size. Called "Graceful Branch Movement" it will be the tallest freestanding piece they have ever created and perhaps we will have it in next year's AIPAD show. This is What Climate Change Looks Like, Unfortunately: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanos, by Robert Glenn Ketchum

We are still in one of the snowiest, wettest winters ever, which was proceeded by the hottest summer for much of the Earth. NASA reports that the Earth's surface temperature has increased steadily since the 1880's, and the last decade has recorded temperatures rising to "the highest levels ever recorded". For insureres worldwide, it's been the most expensive worldwide, all weather-related.

Personally I view the National Academy of Science (NAS) as very cautious and relatively conservative about their public statements, so I was especially alarmed to read the article I posted May 20th from the LATimes regarding the NAS’s most recent warnings regarding the acceleration of effects from climate change.

Here is some other recent science of note: NASA announced that satellite monitoring indicates Antarctica is rising very slowly now that the weight of glacial ice is melting off of it. This is a geological phenomenon known as 'isostatic rebound' and it is common to small islands in the Arctic, it is just no human has ever experienced it at the scale of the entire south pole... the largest continent on the planet.

In fact, just this week NASA released findings from a NASA-funded satellite study, 'NASA Finds Polar Ice Adding More To Rising Seas', where they concluded that sea level is likely to be "significantly higher" than levels projected by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007

So, first question being asked: 1) How much ocean will be displaced, as that will affect inundation levels elsewhere in the world. Scientists have begun to research this. 2) The question not yet asked is, if the largest continent on the planet is moving around, and it is connected to all of the plates, don’t you think the plates would move as well. Correspondingly, if that were true, it would seem there would be a lot more big earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions occurring because of Antarctica’s “movement”.

If you were to 'Google' all earthquakes above 5.5, and all volcano eruptions in the last two decades, you will see a considerable upswing in both that begins to occur during the last 20-years, about the same time the ice began to unweight the continent. I've been tracking the more significant ones here.

I am no scientist, I am just sayin’… this is interesting, and I think it is much bigger than we know….

For 45 years Robert Glenn Ketchum's imagery and books have helped define contemporary color photography while at the same time addressing critical environmental Issues. In 2010, American Photo magazine featured Robert Glenn Ketchum as the 5th in their series of American Master photographers including him with such luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon. Ketchum is a Founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

Ketchum's distinctive prints are in numerous major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the National Museum of American Art (DC), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Museum of Modern Art (NY), to name a few.

Ketchum's work in the Tongass rainforest of Alaska is one of his most visible successes and has been acknowledged as helping to pass the most significant timber reform legislation in American history. Ketchum has been working since 1998 to protect Bristol Bay, the most productive wild salmon fishery in North America. Bristol Bay and the habitat that supports it, is located in southwest Alaska. Recognizing his effort, Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar gave Ketchum the "Partners in Conservation Award" in 2010. The threat to Bristol Bay is proposed as the largest open-pit copper and cyanide gold-leachmine in the world. Called "The Pebble Mine", would be situated in the headwaters of the fishery, between two national parks, three national wildlife refuges, and four state designated parks.

I am very excited to welcome Jeanne Gadol as a designer to my fabric and accessory design company, Jin Jiang Joy. Jeanne and I have known each other for many years, so it is wonderful to be working with her as we explore the application of photographs derived from nature to fabrics.

Jeanne and I met during a trip to Alaska on which I was one of the lecturing guest photographers. I recognized immediately that she was already an accomplished photographer, but as we came to know each other better, I learned that she was also a graphic designer.

After that trip, we stayed in touch with each other and eventually I saw a good deal of her graphic design work which was impressive and incorporated her photographic images in substantially altered ways. In fact, I thought them so striking I recommended her work to PC PHOTO magazine, who published a portfolio of her images.

Jeanne and her husband Steve (also an excellent photographer) have a lovely home at Sea Ranch in Mendocino, CA and for many years I also taught a photography workshop program in Mendocino at the Albion River Inn. To broaden the exposure of my students during these workshops, I asked Jeanne if she would come in and teach/speak about her use of photography in her graphic design, so for several years she was involved with me in that way.

When I founded Jin Jiang Joy, she was very excited by my ideas and struck off on her own to create a number of accessory products derived from her imagery. I love what she has done and wanted her to be part of my new company as a designer of her own signature line. So, Jeanne is now part of Jin Jiang Joy and these are some of her offerings. Note that her editions are VERY small, her prices quite reasonable, and her designs are fabulous. This is just the beginning. Jin Jiang Joy looks forward to bringing you much more as we grow this business and broaden the application of our images to other accessories.

The Boat Company - My Fav Places

The Tongass rainforest is one of the most beautiful places I have ever adventured. It is also one of the rarest rainforests in the world because it is not on the equator, but rather, almost within the Arctic Circle. Home to massive old growth trees, huge Grizzly bear, the largest eagle population on the planet, and a daily show of marine life that includes Orca, whale, seals, etc., the fiords and mountains of southeast Alaska / The Inside Passage are a must if you expect to "see" Alaska.

The lazy tourist tries to do all of this from a cruiseship and consequently misses most of the show. These boats can never "get into" the really great places where you can view this world at a personal level. But, if not a large cruise liner, then what? It IS a cool, and sometimes cold, rainforest which means rain on most days and a lot of rain on some days, and then there are the bears. The PERFECT solution is to cruise on smaller boats, and the best of those plying the waters of Southeast and the Tongass belong to The Boat Company.

Their flagships are small (20-26 persons), brilliant staffed, equipped to do everything, AND it would be hard to find this kind of comfort, even at onshore lodging. The Boat Company has converted older workboats to luxury vessels adorned with beautiful wood decks and details. With well-designed space, staterooms provide ample comfort (but most of the time you WANT to be outside so as not to miss anything) and that leaves room for generous common areas, kayaks, fishing gear, wet gear storage, and 19¹ aluminum skiffs for ship-shore transport, fishing and exploration.

The fantail is an enclosed dining area where some of the best meals ever get served, often consisting of the days fresh catch of salmon or Dungeness crab, and the meals are prepared by gourmet chefs recruited from fine cooking schools. Evening camaraderie usually covers the days various adventures that may have taken different groups in differing directions, so everyone has something to say about their journey. We are all bonded by the astounding experiences. It also helps that if the hike was wet or the fishing day windy, we have all had a great hot shower before dinner and are now wearing dry clothes.

Daily trips might include kayaking a tidal area to investigate pools and shoreline, a hike in the woods to an elevated viewpoint for a breathtaking glimpse of the forested islands, or a round of fishing for whatever can be caught, salmon, halibut, char, Dolly Varden,Yum! Trips are designed for all levels of fitness and willingness. All trips include knowledgeable guides and naturalists who are constantly downloading information about the surroundings. The Boat Company has been one of the leadership groups in defending the Tongass from clearcut destruction and their staff specifically addresses the rich biodiversity of your trek or paddle. Walks in the old-growth forests are very revealing and quite out-of-this-world. You will not only feel transported to another time of giant vegetation, but you will actually learn about the old-growth forest and how important its continued survival is for all of us.

I have been aboard The Boat Company's various boats numerous times with, and without my children (who love the trips and rate them as their BEST), and I am grateful to the owners of The Boat Company, the family members of The Mcintosh Foundation, for there unending commitment to protecting the Tongass. They supported my 1986 book, The Tongass: Alaska's Vanishing Rain Forest, helping me to distribute it in Congress, distributing another 30,000 copies on their own through their network, and also helping to put up the national traveling exhibit about the Tongass that was premiered at the National Museum of Natural History (DC) on Earth Day in 1994 (without the Alaskan delegation succeeding in taking it down, although they tried). And now, The Boat Company is supporting International League of Conservation Photographer's Fellow, Amy Gulick, and her new book about the Tongass:, 'Salmon In The Trees'.

The Boat Company not only talks-the-talk, telling and showing you this remarkable place, they also walk-the-walk, placing their time and money into sustainable tourism alternatives in Southeast and direct action in Washington, DC. They walk-the-walk when they take you out into the Tongass as well, ...whether it is just watching glaciers calve into awesome vertical fiords from the safety of their Almar aluminum skiffs, or actually following "secret" bear trails in the woods to epic giant trees in the rain, you will always be grateful you did this and I doubt you will ever be uncomfortable because of the conditions. Having spent much time in this rainy world camping with kayaks, I can assure you that are less determined than I, but no less appreciative of such a magnificent world, that a Boat Company trip is an ultimate journey to very special and unique part of Alaska. "Storm Drain", Waves of the Chesapeake Bay break against the opening of a storm drain that runs from the Ocean View beachfront directly into the bay in Norfolk, Virginia. This is but one of several massive storm drains that line the beach every few hundred yards. RGK Food Reviews of West Palm Beach!

Greetings from gorgeous Palm Beach! As you already know, I'm visiting Florida from my home in Los Angeles since I'm being honored by FOTOfusion® 2011 at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. Thanks Fatima!

This year The Centre has a fabulous new location, and I'm quite pleased with how all my works look in it's fantastic space.

Since it is a new location, many of we regular attendees of FOTOfusion® are exploring the area for new favorite food & beverage spots. That being said, I'm posting some of my recommended finds here through my Social Media network. Cheers & bon appetit!

Tonight I had dinner at 'Pistache'. It's a fantastic French Bistro restaurant, and while it's certainly more expensive than average faire, it is without-a-doubt some of the best food on Clematis Street! Michael Siegel, the general manager, was a very gracious host, and my dinner was great. I definitely recommend having dinner here while in West Palm.

And 'Sky309' is a fun plein air rooftop deck above Roxy's Pub, The Saloon and ROME Nightclub.

They have reasonable bar-type food, great drinks, a live band, and GREAT outdoor views.

This is a shot of the interior of, GREASE, the WPB hamburger joint. What a great way to quench your appetite after an authentic cattle drive!

Here's another GOOD restaurant, LUNA, near the end of Clematis - you gotta luv turkish dining under a Mayan calendar with a beautiful bartender from the Ukraine - talk about international cuisine. Excellent, and authentic food - good hummus, oh yeah and try the feta rolls and South African Cabernet. Thank you Osman & staff for a lovely evening.

We had a great evening at Luna, a Turkish bar with very good mid-eastern food, that's reasonably priced.

This wild lighted design is about 14' across & is really cool. The design is the Mayan calendar, despite this being a Turkish bar.

If you go to Luna, give my regards to Osman, the owner.

Fatima NeJame, president and chief executive officer of the world-renowned Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC), has announced that celebrated photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum will be the recipient of the prestigious FOTOmentor Award during FOTOfusion 2011.

The 16th annual FOTOfusion will be held Jan. 11-15 and will offer more than 100 workshops, lectures, panel discussions, multimedia presentations, portfolio reviews, hands-on computer classes, demonstrations, and photo shoots taught by an impressive faculty of industry leaders and photographic giants who donate their time and expertise to educate, mentor, and encourage creativity among participants of all levels and ages. FOTOfusion bills itself as “where creativity and technology fuse,” and it attracts participants from around the globe.

A highlight of the upcoming FOTOfusion will be the presentation of the prestigious FOTOmentor Award to Robert Glenn Ketchum, a longtime friend and supporter of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. In turn, Ketchum will present PBPC’s Rising Star Award to Miguel Ángel de la Cueva, a young Fellow from the International League of Conservation Photographers who is doing remarkable work in Mexico and Baja.

Each year, the PBPC Awards Committee selects a photographer to receive the FOTOmentor Award in honor of his/her lifetime achievements in the world of photography. Previous recipients include distinguished photographers Gordon Parks, Sebastiao Salgado, Arnold Newman, Ruth Bernhard, Duane MichaeIs, James Nachtwey, Michael Kenna and David Hume Kennerly, among others.

“To celebrate Ketchum’s distinguished career, I’m proud to announce that the Photo Centre will run a retrospective exhibition of his incredible nature photographs opening on January 2 and running through March 8, 2011,” said Ms. NeJame. “It is seldom that we have the opportunity to feature a photographer that embraces such a diverse approach to photographic image making.”

PBPC will honor Ketchum several times during the weeklong festival:

.. At a reception open to FOTOfusion participants on Jan. 11.

.. At an awards dinner on Jan. 12.

.. At a reception open to the general public on Jan. 13.

In 2010, American Photo magazine featured Robert Glenn Ketchum in their Masters series making him only the fifth photographer they have recognized this way in 20 years of publishing. Unlike the four preceding honorees (Henri Cartier- Bresson, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Annie Liebovitz), Ketchum is unique because his imagery is based almost exclusively in the natural world.

For nearly half a century, Ketchum’s fine prints, and bookmaking, have addressed critical national environmental issues while at the same time helped to define contemporary color photography. His advocate use of photographs and the media has inspired successive generations of artists to work on behalf of social and environmental justice, and led to the creation of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), of which Ketchum is a Founding Fellow. As a result, Audubon has named Ketchum one of the 100 people “who shaped the conservation movement of the 20th Century.”

In the early ‘80’s, Ketchum entered China through the UCLA-China Exchange Program, and began to collaborate with some of the historic embroidery guilds of Suzhou to develop complex textiles based on his photographs. Some of the most recent examples of this embroidery and loom weaving, many of which took years to complete, will be included in this exhibit, as will new designs from the digital darkroom that Ketchum has recently developed for the embroiderers.

Ketchum’s distinctive, dimensional prints are in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the National Museum of American Art (DC), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY). Significant archives (more than 100 images) have been acquired by the Amon Carter Museum (TX) and the Huntington Library and Gardens (CA), and substantial bodies of work can be found at the High Museum (GA), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum (OH), Stanford University Art Museum (CA), the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Cornell University (NY), and the National Museum of American Art.

Camp Denali - My Fav Places

Most of you know that since the mid-1980's I have spent some part of every year in Alaska, sometimes as much as half the year. I love Alaska, and in my life it is the greatest wilderness experience I have ever had. It is bigger and wilder than most of us can imagine. That is the beauty of it, but also the factor that intimidates many potential visitors. If you do not book some lame cruise or excursion packed with clients that want complete luxury and protection, how do you experience the best Alaska has to offer, mixing the wild with the civil?

There are two choices for me, the incomparable CAMP DENALI in Denali National Park and The Boat Company in the Tongass rainforest. I address The Boat Company/Tongass in another post on this blog, so for now I hope to turn your attention to CAMP DENALI.

It hard to imagine the scale of Denali National Park and the experience it provides. At more than 6,000,000 acres! and containing North America's highest summit, Denali park is unparalleled in our National Park system it is the crown among the jewels. It is also VERY big and VERY wild!

If you come to Denali as part of tour group, you will discover (to the surprise of many) that you will stay in lodges outside the park, you will NOT see the summit on a daily basis, and to really see anything, you will have to take an all-day bus ride from your lodge EVERY day. That bus ride likely won't take you much more than 1/2 way into the park! You will see animals, but you will have little time to enjoy the experience because you are on a schedule.

There is ONLY ONE WAY to truly "get" this amazing wild place CAMP DENALI!

CAMP DENALI is a "rustic" camp located in the center of the park, and it has been constructed on ridgeline FACING the summit so that all cabins have windows with a view of the peak -- this is important as the summit is only visible an average of 40 days out of the year. (Inside the park there are a few other small lodges, however they have no view of Denali.)

CAMP DENALI was homesteaded and founded in 1951 by two Alaskan Pioneer women Celia Hunter and Ginny Wood, and they knew what they were doing! Constructed and added to over many years, CAMP DENALI features cozy, hand-built log cabins warmed by classic wood stoves and lit by propane lamps. Each cabin is separate from the others by some distance, and each has a spring fed water source plumbed to a spigot immediately outside with a discreet privy quite close by. The cabins have been designed for the view, so they feature huge glass windows facing Mt. McKinley and on a cold night under a full moon, should the summit emerge from it's cloud cap, you can enjoy the sight from your snuggly, quilt-covered bed.

There are several "commons" facilities that include very comfortable men's and women's showers, a natural history room with a piano, a "library" and gathering room where evening programs are held, and a spectacular new dining room. The dining room windows also face the summit and look over a nearby pond into which a moose and calf wander on the 1st breakfast of my most recent visit. My two children went crazy, as did the many others kids that were there (adults included in this category). The moose/calf were un-threatening, enjoying their breakfast from the lake greens, and VERY close for all to see. Needless to say, the photographers among us were quite happy as well. Meals in the dining room feature organic gourmet cooking, often with regional items and there is always a vegetarian plate.

Given this lodge's historic status and long relationship with the National Park Service, it can provide for the public like no other facility in the park and that is what makes the experience so rich. NO other lodge, in or out of the park is licensed to offer daily guide service in the designated Wilderness region of the park, the most scenic, wild, pristine and mountainous areas. At CAMP DENALI there are excursions EVERYDAY, led by highly experienced guide/naturalists. These trips are offered at differing levels of exertion so that everyone can participate. Often guests will ride out in a bus to spot animals, do a hike, have lunch along the route, watch more animals, and return late. Did I say, "watch animals!?!" You had better believe it! In my many years of staying at CAMP DENALI I have seen countless Dall's sheep, and caribou; my children and I watched two bull moose battle it out until one backed the other into a nearby pond and nearly drowned it; also with my kids, a moose and calf strolled through camp at twilight to the delight of numerous guests -- in their pajamas -- that followed them around at a safe distance; my photography class came upon a lone white wolf, sunning itself within 50-yards; a black, yellowed-eyed wolf digging for squirrels within 50FEET of the bus (one student using a telephoto got a full-frame shot of JUST the eye); a grizzly bear with two cubs that emerged from the bush onto the road, SO close that those with big lenses could NOT get the shot; and, a truly unique experience at some distance, a pack of wolves attacked a grizzly bear and drove it off, defending their territory. You will NEVER have experiences like this from such a safe position anywhere else in the world, period!

All of this happens because the guide staff is so good. They are great 'people-people', always interacting well with the guests and placing the guests first. Most are naturalists and park historians who always have interesting information to relate, and they connect with both adults and children. In the shot above, my group had taken a lunch break after the morning hike, and to aid digestion we are now "tundra-rolling" -- going head-over-heals down a spongy tundra slope. The silliness of this became so infectious, that with the guides cajoling, even the adults participated -- THAT was funny!

As a photographer, don't even get me going about the astounding -- albeit very brief -- fall color. The tundra may not be the same as the trees of New England, but the show is easily as good.

CAMP DENALI has canoes for paddling about on nearby Wonder Lake in full view of the summit and its supportive range, and there are mountain bikes as well. One great trip is to depart on the bus to the National Park's Eielson Visitor Center, offload at the visitor's center, and bicycle back to CAMP DENALI. There is also flight seeing offered from nearby Kantishna Air Taxi (link: www.katiar.com), whose van will pick you up at CAMP DENALI and deliver you back. Owner Greg LaHaie and his crew are knowledgeable pilots who have flown this area SAFELY most of their careers, so even for the flight-timid, this is a "must" recommendation. If you are a photographer, these pilots are also photo-savvy, so this will be an experience unlike anything else you have ever done, and they will help you get THE shot.

Lastly, but not least, are the evening programs that are held in the common library. I have spoken there many times during my numerous visits, but there are always multiple presentations during any one stay, and they are all memorable. Most of the presentations are given by staff naturalists, however Camp Denali's 'Special Emphasis Series' also brings in visiting speakers.

My last visit included a presentation from the twin sisters Miki and Julie Collins who live at the remote edge of the park and are known for their authentic subsistence lifestyle. The pictures and presentation were Alaskan humor at its best, and the photograph of them in their relatively small, hand-built cabin, sleeping with their ENTIRE dog team of 15+ huskies would be viral if posted on the net. These evenings are not to be missed.

For my money and time, CAMP DENALI is one of THE best Alaskans experiences you could ever hope for. Follow the links to learn more, see price packages, and lengths of stay. There are other ways to encounter this park, but CAMP DENALI provides a combination of elements comfort, guidance, learning programs, a point of view, camp camaraderie, and a hot shower/great meal at the end of the day that the others cannot touch. If you only get to Alaska once in your life, and you are willing to "rough-it" just a little (very little) this is the trip!

Isostatic Rebound: Earthquake & Volcano Activity

For some time now I have tracked earthquake and volcano activity in this Climate Change portion of my blog. I do this because NASA data suggests that both Greenland and Antarctica are "moving" (known as isostatic rebound) as the ice weight melts off of them, and if it is true that one of the largest islands in the world, and THE largest continent start to flex, they will shift tectonic plates worldwide setting off earthquakes and increasing volcanic activity. Clearly, this has just been personal speculation on my part, and part of the beauty of being able to blog.

Now it seems the science community may be taking more notice of this possibility. I await their conclusions, but I am buying earthquake preparedness kits for my whole family now and not expecting the empirical evidence any time soon.

This summer when I was teaching in Jackson Hole, WY, we were rocked by a large swarm of quakes of small quakes (40 or more/4.0 magnitude) at a time when no local I spoke with can ever remember experiencing a quake. On September 26, Nebraska was rattled by a small 3.0+ in an area earthquake activity is considered extremely rare.

Unfortunately, these may just be "awakening" signs. In the winter of 1811-1812, The New Madrid fault zone in SE Missouri produced three of the strongest earthquakes to ever strike the continental U.S. And, more ominously, scientists have discussed for years the danger of the Yellowstone Basin "waking up" because Yellowstone IS an ancient volcano, and a prehistoric Yellowstone produced the largest and most cataclysmic volcanic eruption in the evolution of North America.

If a changing climate triggers these kinds of activities and events, I would like us all to consider the concept of keeping the climate as stable as possible, as soon as possible, please! I don't give a damn about whose fault these changes are, we need to address these changes.

The philosopher, Thomas Huxley, said, "Human existence is a race between intelligence and extinction".

Darwin's theory has also been misstated. He actually said that it is not the smartest, nor the fittest, but those that will adapt the most quickly that will survive.

The race is on. I hope those in the human population that don't think it is, wake up and start running. We need everybody thinking about this, and for human creativity to rise to the occasion and address these changes in our environment or humanity will no longer be a relevant species.
